Description

OS202 - Wikipedia EN 20

It is painfully slow to open links. So slow that one would believe it is not working and would continue to re-click or try other links. If it is not possible to speed it up can we add a "Loading" message.

  • Milestone changed from Not Triaged to 1.5-software-update

ES is faster; the problem with EN is that it includes many more templates, which get rendered as if they were individual pages.

We could just disable templates altogether for EN. It would get much faster, but you'd lose things like factboxes that are often the information that people are specifically looking for in an article.

Both WikipediaEN and ES were painfully slow.

I've profiled it and narrowed down on template expansion. By inlining/expanding the templates directly in the datadump, we shrink the data and make it radically faster.

Sample timings on XO1.5 are

Argentina 31s to 13s (worst-case - extremely heavy page in size and template usage, 365KB HTML payload!)
Andorra 22s to 2.6s (large-ish page, heavy template usage - 71KB HTML payload)
Lógica 6s to 3s

Please test the bundles at http://dev.laptop.org/~martin/wikipedia_es/ and http://dev.laptop.org/~martin/wikipedia_en/

The test method for the timings above was "curl -o /dev/null [url]".

Loading those pages from the webbrowser will take a bit longer because the webbrowser has to interpret/render the HTML, and will request additional images, CSS files, etc.

Those XO bundles need a bit of fiddling -- at the moment they don't install cleanly.

Updated the bundles, they are good now. Side-by-side testing on two XO-1.5s shows a huge improvement.

The Browse.xo improvement of showing a 'busy' cursor also helps the perception of responsiveness.

Martin, the archive of http://dev.laptop.org/~martin/wikipedia_es/ seem to be corrupted. Can not be unzipped. I have added the english version to the activity wiki page, so it can be tested in http://build.laptop.org/10.1.3/xo-1.5/os356/ .

After installing it here on 355 I could not run the first launch successfully. The second run did work. And yes - loading time has improved a lot! Congrats!

Thanks for the feedback -- seen side-by side, I also see some templates haven't expanded correctly.

Working on it...

Right

These

  • Sort out some of the language mismatch issues
  • Include the new icon from Gonzalo (which does generate some harmless warnings)
  • Install and start at first go -- but you do have to revert a recent sugar patch for both languages to co-exist nicely.

I compared the WikipediaEN-23 Activity in os360b and compared to the same activity running in 10.1.2. The newer version seemed to be at least twice as fast when loading pages without a connection to the Internet.
