Description

Ivan has requested this for security reasons (can't unsolder the SPI flashes and override security). Jim is searching for the right epoxy and will pass on to QCI or Wad or MLJ on completion.

using a BGA (ball grid array) package might do as well?

No, we really want serious damage to occur if you try to remove the flash; even BGA's can be unsoldered, particularly with a package with as few pins as an SPI flash (for which I doubt there is a BGA package).

OK, I consulted with my college buddy at Dow.

Dow is not in the business of making adhesives/epoxies themselves: rather, making the chemicals that are used by manufacturers of such materials.

The manufacturers that make the adhesives for the electronics industry for these sorts of applications are:

  • Henkel
  • National Starch (Ablestick)

These are the top two in the industry.

I have left contact information with both of these. When I hear more, I'll update this.

Quanta has not agreed to add this epoxy. It is too costly and time consuming for their mfg process and they don't believe it works.

I'll move this bug out (rather than close it); but I don't think this is a solution we can pursue. Alternatives?
