Black box appears in Chat on startup

When you first start Chat, there is always an empty black text box displayed next to the user's name and icon.

I think the black box may be intended to be a box saying "Connecting..." as that's what was displayed as the first text box when it ran on a B2. For some reason you just get a black box on B3s. I'm attaching logs to see if it clears anything up.

I've explicitly set that box to have a gray background then - in jhbuild it defaults to that if no background is specified. Maybe for some reason on the B3 it works differently.
