#2154 closed enhancement (fixed)

Brush size in Oficina should not be a numerical menu

Reported by: jfuhrer Owned by: nathalia.sautchuk
Priority: normal Milestone: 8.2.0 (was Update.2)

Description

OFW: Q2C18
Build: 505

In Oficina, it probably isn't going to be immediately obvious to a child that the size menu is for size when it is indicated by numbers and not shapes. At the very least it should have some sort of label saying that it's the size menu, but preferably each menu option would display a circle of the actual size the brush would be. Just seeing a bunch of increasing numbers on a menu doesn't make it clear that it controls size.

Also, the scale of sizes is somewhat small. 1 and 2 are not even visible when using Brush, and 100000, the maximum size, isn't very big at all.

I would like to second Nathalia's observation. In my testing with 5-6 year olds, they needed the brush size increased before being able to begin to use the paint application, and none were able to do this themselves after a week of use, one hour per day. The significance of the numeric size was not apparent to them initially at all, and they didn't have the dexterity to navigate to the tiny up arrowhead to increase it, once they were told about it. This defect in the UI made the program unusable without close adult intervention, which implied that the activity was not usable in the classroom given the ordinary adult/child ratio. (On the other hand, yay TuxPaint.) I would argue that fixing this has a high priority if the application is to be kept.
