Can someone here explain what is essential to change in it for 1.0?

Replying to marco:

I added Eben, kimquirk, and jg to the bug. Perhaps one of them can answer the question.

I just split #1543 into pieces (now http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Startup_Sequence is authoritative, I think) and created bugs for the pieces that currently didn't match the design. I take no responsibility for prioritizing the bugs.

I don't think we're actually making any use of this name other than a visual one - as a nickname, basically. It doesn't have any technical implications or matter for registration in any way, right? Obviously there are a number of ways that having first/last name distinguished can be useful, but I'm not sure we have a use for them at present.

Perhaps a better question to ask is if we will ever need such info. We don't want to force the kids to wipe their identity once we actually do have need, do we?

Either way, we may need to reconsider that design slightly for localization reasons. I assume that the first/last split we're familiar with isn't the norm in all countries/cultures.

Indeed not. Family vs. given name may be in either order, and there may be cultures which use a single name. I have a friend whose name is "TV Raman". The letters *are* the name.

I think, personally, with first generation pretty boot done, that all of this can wait until after FRS.

But I'd run this by Walter, as he has to deal with Nicholas.

I don't see any pressing need to resolve this now. When we do it, we will have to take into consideration right-to-left languages and cultures where more than two names are used.

So far, we're effectively asking for a nickname and nothing more. The possibility of adding additional identity info (full name, address, etc.) is something worth discussing in detail, but it seems (to me, at least) that in any case we'd prefer to keep first boot extremely simple, and asking kids to a) recall a bunch of info they may or may not even know and b) type that info when they've never typed before is the wrong thing to do.

I'm changing the title to reflect the decision to be made.
