This seems like a half-implemented feature of some kind?

When in an activity (e.g. Write), if you press the Frame button, wait for the frame to appear, then press the Overlay button, a white square appears in the center of the screen and the rest is dimmed.

The white blob seems non-functional and it's not clear how to get rid of it.
