#5976 new defect

closing lid fails to suspend

Reported by: chihyu Owned by: cjb
Priority: high Milestone: 8.2.0 (was Update.2)
Component: power manager (OHM) Version:
Keywords: Cc: kimquirk
Blocked By: Blocking:
Deployments affected: Action Needed:
Verified: no

Description

Tested with 3 joyride-1520, Q2D8a machines.

The symptoms are similar to those described in #3505.

  • Close the lid while playing a local ogg music file from Browse.
  • The wireless indicator and power indicator both flash.
  • The screen turns off (when later opening the lid, it's easy to see the screen turning on).
  • Every few seconds, the power indicator lights up for more than 1 second. Whenever the power indicator does so, music is played.
  • 1 out of 3 machines (olpc-updated from 1489 via Internet) plays the music more frequently than the other 2.

When the lid is open, the screen turns on, and the music keeps playing smoothly.

This is inherent to our distinction between "suspend" and "sleep" modes being made in userspace. For update.2, I hope to have the EC learn about sleep mode, and not wake the machine up at all for wireless traffic or keypresses.

This bug would also be worked-around by there being a way to turn off the wireless in sleep mode (#3355), since that's what's waking us up.

Tested on 3 machines with update.1 689, q2d08.

The machines don't seem to be affected at all by lid closing:

  • the power indicator remains on
  • both wireless indicators remain on/flashing
  • the screen remains on

Is this due to the "downgrade" to q2d08?

This is still with audio playing?

I tried both: with audio playing and without any activity launched.

Hm, that's new. I did fix a bug (which I hope will get into Update.1-690) that deals with failing to go to sleep when the lid is closed, but I'd only seen the bug on one machine, so I'm not sure that it's the same one. Maybe I can drop by and see this in action on a laptop in an hour or so?

It turns out that /etc/ohm/inhibit-suspend exists in build 689.
