Build 653 is a bit old to contain newer translations. You can check the latest status of French translations at  https://dev.laptop.org/translate/fr

I'll look into the keyboard issue asap.

Is this keyboard now working in Update.1 builds like 703 or 70x? If not, we should consider fixing it for a possible summer G1G1 in both France and Canada.

http://wiki.laptop.org/go/OLPC_French_(ca)(ht)_Keyboard is there for machines for Haiti. I think G1G1 users will be able to enable this. I need to check on the status of the console keymap. Wrt translations, build 708 seems to be pretty well translated into French.
