Description

Required: * touchscreen (several methods are currently under investigation) including optical, capacitive, pressure sensitive, wifi use, and so forth.

Optional: * change white LEDs to RGB LEDs to improve color gamut

Reach Goal (supposed to be Gen2, but perhaps can be moved up): * remove polarizers by using opto-electronic modes that work without polarization, impact is both in cost reducation(TBD, possibly ~20-30%), power consumption reducation (2-3X) and improvement in reflectivity (also 2-3X). Do this while perserving video rate function, color in transmission mode, and high resolution.

I know this is probably too expensive/hard to implement, but a touch screen with 2 points of simultaneous contact would be really nice. You could then do gestures for zooming, rotating etc. Similar to what's demonstrated here : http://cs.nyu.edu/~jhan/ftirtouch/index.html

(One can dream ;) )

When you touch your screen, it soon becomes hopelessly scratched.

This would also add stress on the neck joint.

Except in darkness, an improvement in reflectivity will hurt the color gamut. Reflected light will wash out the colors in color mode.

See also #1419: it should be possible to slow down the screen refresh rate without slowing down the dot clock, merely by stretching the vertical retrace interval like a CRT. This would allow the refresh rate to be dialed down most of the time, yet have it be dialed back up to 50Hz instantly whenever someone writes to the screen. If the panel requires a minimum refresh rate, this would require DCON changes.

Note that the Nintendo DS has a touch screen and is used by millions of children daily, scratching is not an issue when the right materials are used.

But the stress on the hinge probably is, I think it would be awkward to touch the screen in anything but tablet mode.

Pressure sensitivity is key though, as many levels as possible and as quick response as possible.

Also, feel free to send me a prototype Gen2 screen and I'll get Colors! working on it in pressure sensitive mode :)

Replying to wadeb:

I wonder if a kid could press REALLY HARD, because this sure encourages it. Pressure sensitivity is just begging for cracked screens.
