Wrong key press order for Amharic characters

Reported by: Eskender Owned by: sayamindu

Description

Normally to write a single Amharic character we press the consonant first and followed by the vowel but now with the xo it works the other way round

And it will be great if it works the consonant first and then the vowel, this how most of us are familiar with and the other Amharic softwares(power geez)works this way.

Hi Eskender,

Thanks for filing this one!

I understand you wont use 8.2 in Ethiopia so I'm putting this in 8.2.1.

I hope Sayamindu and team can come up with an acceptable design proposal before then.

Thanks,

Greg S

This will require SCIM to be installed in 8.2.1. Getting SCIM in for 8.2.1 will be a significant challenge, since it will require replacing the current input method framework (which handles all our keyboard layouts at the moment).

This requires significant effort (especially in testing, to ensure that there are no regressions). Moreover, all our existing keyboard layout data needs to be converted into a format which is understood by SCIM. I'm trying my best to automate this as much as as possible, but I have been only partially successful till now.

One of my primary criteria of successfully having SCIM on the XO is that the user experience should not change. We have a very simple and elegant way of handling multiple keyboard layouts in a single physical keyboard, and I do not want that to change.

By my estimate, development + integration + testing will take around three to four man months. I'm not sure if we can do this in the 8.2.1 timeframe.

Thanks for the notes, Sayamindu. Sounds like this would be good to try to get into joyride by the end of the year (Jan, latest), but we should not count on it sooner. Moving this out to 9.1.
